MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) is a professional degree in medicine and surgery awarded upon graduation from medical college to pursue a career in medicine. Though, the degree suggests that they are two individual undergraduate degrees; but in practice, they are usually treated as one. MBBS degree is one of the popular careers in India. Though the duration of the course is 5.5 years and rigid quality academics, there is always a heavy demand for the course.
Medical colleges are accredited by the Medical Council of India (MCI). Admission to MBBS course in government colleges is quite tough due to merit rankings. The minimum score requirements for the MBBS course are 50% marks in physics, chemistry, biology and English in the '10+2' examinations. For reserved students (category) the score requirement is 40%. MBBS admissions are not entirely centralised. The government is planning to come up with new medical colleges many districts. It is said that these colleges will add 6,000 more MBBS seats in the country.
